Course Description

This course is designed for advanced (C1–C2) learners of English whose writing has reached a plateau—a common outcome for learners at this level, including graduate students, working professionals, and other advanced learners striving to push an already high level of fluency further.

Rather than following a fixed syllabus of grammar points or style rules, the curriculum responds directly to what students write and say. Each class combines high-level reading and listening input with discussion and debate, followed by extensive writing assignments designed to surface the fossilized errors and unnatural patterns that typically persist at this stage of language acquisition. This workflow is complemented by instruction and error review in advanced grammar, punctuation, and style.

NOTE:Because we will write in every session, you must bring a laptop or tablet with detachable keyboard to class. Please be sure that your device is charged before we meet as there are few electrical outlets in the classrooms.

注意事項:由於每堂課皆須進行寫作練習,請學員務必攜帶筆記型電腦或配有可拆式鍵盤的平板電腦到課。另外,教室內插座數量有限,請於上課前確保自己的設備電力充足。

Course Structure & Content

The full course consists of two 10-week terms, with 3-hour classes. Lecturing is deemphasized, but not excluded. The first hour of each class typically introduces advanced grammar, syntax, punctuation, and style elements, as well as a review of issues common to the class in the previous week’s writing task.

The second and third hours form the core of the course, which includes long-form reading and related group discussions followed by a writing assignment based on the reading and discussions.

Because the class is highly flexible and responsive to student output, it’s not possible to design a rigid weekly schedule of content. That said, the tutorials in the two terms should include, but are not limited to, the following grammatical, stylistic, and foundational topics:

Term 1:

Formal document formatting (UK and US)

Permissible use of AI in academic & professional contexts

Use of corpora and concordancers

Advanced punctuation

Basic cohesive devices

Preposition collocations

Article usage

Passive vs Active voice in academic and professional writing

Paragraphing

Paraphrasing / Summarizing

Term 2:

Conciseness & Clarity

Building sentence variety (Parts I-III)

Advanced cohesion

Global cohesion

Reduced structures

Nominalization

Hedging & Boosting

Summative modifiers

Reported speech (weak/neutral/strong verbs & harmony of tenses)

OBJECTIVES

Over the course of the full two terms, students strengthen control of sentence-level style, improve cohesion, identify and eliminate fossilized errors, and develop the ability to investigate authentic usage independently through corpora. The result is writing with greater precision, flow, and control.

COURSE MATERIALS

All of the materials we’ll use in this course are free.

Handout Booklet

The core instructional materials are contained in a teacher-prepared handout booklet that combines tutorials from major university writing labs with those I’ve written myself. Again, the booklet is free, and I’ll distribute it on the first day of class.

Required Texts

Both of the following grammar texts are supplemental to the course. They’re intended to spot-repair persistent lower-level errors that show up in students’ writing, not as core texts for our class. You can download these without charge at the following links.

Brehe’s Grammar Anatomy (Stephen Brehe)

Grammar for Academic Writing – The University of Edinburgh (Tony Lynch & Kenneth Anderson)
